My Choice of Genre

I have chosen to base my music magazine on the Rock/Metal/Hardcore genre. This is because I have a huge interest in this area, therefore I know a fair amount about the genre, meaning it is a sensible one for me to base my ideas on.

Here are some of the kinds of bands I would like to base my magazine on:

Avenged sevenfold - They are my favourite band, and are extremely popular at the present, with their latest album "Nightmare" topping the charts in July 2010 in US. In December 2009 the drummer, Jimmy Sullivan, aka "The Rev" sadly passed away (RIP). However, they have carried on, and have recently announced their latest tour, titled "The Buried Alive Tour". Avenged Sevenfold can't really be fit into any particular genre, as they are very different to most bands, and therefore do not meet the "requirements" for any particular genre... but if they had to be placed into one it would be close to hard rock/metal.

Atreyu - This band also fits into the hard rock/nu-metal genre, although they are still very different to Avenged Sevenfold, due to the vocal style they use, having both a strong vocalist and a screamer in the band.

Escape the Fate - They are slightly different to Avenged Sevenfold and Atreyu, as they are placed into the post-hardcore genre. However, they do have a lot of similarities within the music, and so are largely listened to by the same audience.

A Day to Remember - Another extremely popular band at the moment. This is another band that is difficult to place into a genre, as they have post-hardcore elements, linking them to escape the fate, but then they also have pop-punk elements in their music too. This widens the bands audience, and therefore choosing this kind of band to feature in a magazine is a good idea, as it will attract a larger audience.

                                Ideology
-          What message/ moral values I will use to portray my chosen genre and target audience
                                Audience

The evaluation of my Magazine.

Language
My media product develops, challenges and uses forms of conventions from other college magazines, such as a mast head – “We” which stands for “Wyke Entertainer”, a caption and banner headline “Wyke rocks” with a strap line underneath it, both under the medium close up image of a student holding up a guitar. A brand image of a student holding up a guitar to show the musical interests of the students. I also use house style, using the colours purple, black and gold consistently, and also using only two or three different fonts – one simple, one more exotic and used to make the masthead stand out. My masthead is also an indent, giving the magazine its identity as it is the magazine logo. I have organised my layout well in Photoshop to make sure it is neat and tidy on the page, making it easy on the eye for the audience. I have added a special offer to the cover of the page to encourage my audience to buy my magazine, and it will also encourage them to purchase NUS cards. I have added teaser contents on an eye catching banner at the bottom of the page.
Institution
The college will distribute my magazine because it is made for it.
Ideology
My magazine’s focus is representing the new first year students and conveys to the audience what the interests of the new students and what their talents are. The message I am hoping to convey to audience is that entertainment at Wyke is good and exciting.
Audience
The audience of my magazine will be the students at Wyke because it is informing them of entertainment that they are involved in or can attend. I have attracted my audience by choosing images and a headline that will catch their eye, and by making the magazine mainly about them and their stereotypical interests in relation to entertainment. It involves all students, not just one particular stereotype, although it will be most popular among students who are interested in rock music, due to my headline and image. It is not focused on one socio-economic group either, as I did not want to narrow down my audience to one group, as this would create less profit when it goes on sale.
Representation
My media product represents a number of different social groups within the student community. It has a positive representation of the new students; this is evident in the sub heading “new students, new interests, new talent”. However, I have made it seem as if all the new students have new interests and that these interests are related to rock music, when not all the students will like this genre and the new students are certainly not the first to show interest it. The part about talent may suggest that the new students are more talented than the average year group, but it is simply stating that the students have different talents, and obviously being new students, they are seen as a new talent in the college community. The picture and caption/headline may also stereotypically portray that the magazine has been designed for the students who are interested in rock music, so I should probably have added more variety to the cover of the magazine to attract a wider range of students. However it does state that it has information about student parties and etc. so this should attract more people who wish to stay up to date with the latest news on entertainment events.

Audience Feedback

I asked 10 people in my target audience a few simple yes or no answer questions about my magazine. Here are the questions and the answers I got:

Would you say the front cover of my magazine was eye catching?

Answered yes: 8  Answered no: 2

Would you buy my magazine for 80p?

Answered yes: 7  Answered no: 3

Do you agree with the ideology of my magazine that entertainment is important at your age?

Answered yes: 9  Answered no: 1

Would you say the design of my magazine looks proffessional?

Answered yes: 6  Answered no: 4

Could my magazine be easily improved?

Answered yes: 8  Answered no: 2

Due to the amount of people saying my magazine could easily be improved, I then asked 5 students how I could go about improving my magazine if I were to remake it. The answer I got from four people was "to add better teasers as to what's included in the magazine" as this would encourage more students to buy it. The other student said I should have included the date which it was published.

The Brief

Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.
